Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Clonmel Rape Crisis Centre.

138.

asked the Minister for Health the reason national lottery funds have been refused to the Clonmel Rape Crisis Centre, County Tipperary which provides services for women who have been raped and for children who have been sexually abused in the Tipperary/ Waterford/Wexford region.

I have received a very considerable number of requests for assistance from the national lottery proceeds available to my Department. As the Deputy will appreciate, it has been possible to accede to only a relatively small number of these requests because of the limited funds available. In these circumstances I can hold out little hope of being in a position to assist Clonmel Rape Crisis Centre in the current year.

However, the Deputy may be interested to note that a large number of projects in the South Eastern Health Board area have received grants from my Department's 1987-88 lottery allocation including a grant of £80,000 for the provision of improved services for the assessment of alleged cases of child sexual abuse in the South Eastern Health Board area. Similar grants have been made available in all health board areas along with a number of smaller grants to voluntary agencies which provide similar services for women and children.
