Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Driving Test Statistics.

17.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself that there is uniformity of standards between each of the tests in the driving test centres throughout the country.

57.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of people who applied for tests at the Cork Driving Test Centre in (a) 1986 (b) 1987 and (c) 1988; and the numbers of passes and fails in each year.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 57 together.

The statistical information sought by the Deputy is available on a national basis only.

In 1986 77,242 applied for tests, in 1987 79,469 applied and up to 30 September 1988 62,760 applications have been received.

In 1986, the pass rate was 52 per cent. In 1987, it was 53 per cent and it was 54 per cent up to early October this year.

I am satisfied that the arrangements made by this Department for the continuous monitoring and control of the work of driver testers ensures that testing standards throughout the country are as uniform as possible.
