Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authorities Service Charges.

27.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of meetings which have taken place between his Department and the County Managers Association before the campaign was launched by them to appeal for local charges to be paid.

30.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether he supports the campaign of the County and City Managers' Association launched to encourage the public to pay the £30 million arrears of domestic charges allegedly still owed by householders to local authorities throughout the country.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 30 together.

While any legitimate initiative which results in an improvement in the collection of revenues properly due to local authorities and takes due account of the circumstances of those affected must be welcomed, the question of my approval to the particular campaign mentioned does not arise and the campaign has not been the subject of discussions at any meeting between the City and County Managers' Association and my Department.
