Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Animal Health Sanctuary.

113.

andMr. Conaghan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on the statement made by the President of the European Poultry Meat Association in a report (details supplied) suggesting that Ireland be designated as an animal health sanctuary within the EC.

The statement adverted to refers mainly to the need to maintain Ireland's high avian health status. I am conscious of that need and I will endeavour to ensure that any rules adopted at EC level do not jeopardise that status. The Commission has made certain proposals in regard to this issue and my Department is maintaining close liaison with the poultry industry on these.
