Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Kerry New Community Schools.

257.

asked the Minister for Education the progress which has been made to-date regarding the provision of community schools in Rathmore and Kenmare, County Kerry; whether sites have been purchased for these projects; if she will consider a proposed green field site at present on offer in Kenmare; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Building projects for the proposed new community schools at Rathmore and Kenmare were examined in the context of the 1988 second level capital programme and I decided that the architectural planning of both projects should be further advanced this year. The projects' design teams are currently preparing stage 2 (outline sketch scheme) in respect of Rathmore Community School and stage 3 (developed sketch scheme) for Kenmare Community School. Due to the condition of some of the existing prefabricated accommodation at Presentation Convent Rathmore, my Department have already sanctioned the provision of six new classrooms in advance of the main school project. This accommodation is being provided and located so as to form part of the accommodation for the new community school proposed for Rathmore. Sites have been identified for the new schools and in the case of Kenmare, the location of the new school will be on the lands of the Holy Cross secondary school.
