Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Census Returns Access.

81.

asked the Taoiseach if he will indicate the restrictions which apply to access to Census returns for 1901, 1911, and 1926; and the reason these restrictions apply.

The Census returns for 1901 and 1911 are public records in the custody of the National Archives. There are no restrictions on public access to these returns.

The 1926 and subsequent Censuses of Population have been taken under the Statistics Act, 1926 which guarantees the absolute confidentiality of the Census returns. These are not public records. A return or information from a return cannot be communicated to anyone without the consent in writing of the person making the return.
