Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - National Lottery Allocations.

228.

asked the Minister for Education the total amount of moneys allocated to date to projects in south west Cork out of the proceeds of the national lottery; if she will give details of same; and if she will give the proportion of such moneys expressed as a percentage of total allocations from her Department.

Under my Department's schemes of assistance to youth and sport, annual grants are paid to national or large regional voluntary youth organisations and to national voluntary sports organisations. Consequently, it is not possible to furnish information along the lines sought by the Deputy.

A special fund also exists for the development of special services to disadvantaged young people. Grants from this fund are allocated to support local and national initiatives through national youth organisations, vocational education committees or other approved agencies. None of the grants sanctioned from this fund is in respect of projects in South-West Cork.

The provision of the information in the format requested by the Deputy in respect of my Department's capital grant scheme would involve an inordinate amount of time and I am not prepared to divert staff for this purpose.

However, should the Deputy wish to enquire about a particular project, I will endeavour to supply the information sought.

229.

asked the Minister for Education if she has received a copy of an application from Straffan GAA Club, County Kildare for an allocation of funding from proceeds of the National Lottery, the purpose of which is to extend the facilities of this club; if she will give favourable consideration to this request from the club; if her attention has been drawn to the large catchment area served by the club; if she accepts the merit of the application; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As no formal response was elicited from the officials of this club following the announcement that it had received a provisional grant allocation of £10,000, this grant was withdrawn by letter of 17 October 1988.

The appeal against the withdrawal, made by the club, is at present under consideration.
