Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cost of Private School Transport.

45.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Minister for Education the grants which are available from her Department towards the cost of private transport arrangements for students in remote areas attending primary and second level schools; and if there are any other grants available for these students, for example, for purchasing bicycles.

There is a number of grants available from my Department to children attending primary and post-primary schools who are outside the range of transport.

These include: boarding grants (for post-primary pupils who are located outside the normal range of school transport routes); grants towards the cost of private transport arrangements for groups of primary and post-primary pupils who are similarly located; bicycle grants (for primary pupils only).

For the payment of any of the above grants to be warranted there would need to be a degree of hardship involved. All applications are considered in light of the circumstances pertaining to the particular case.
