asked the Minister for Labour, arising out of the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 7 of 27 October, 1988, the plans, if any, he has to have comprehensive studies carried out on the employment impact of the completion of the internal market on various sectors of the Irish labour market; if he proposes to have this work done within his Department and/or in conjunction with FÁS; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Internal Market Impact on Employment.
The determinants of sectoral employment levels, particularly projected levels, are complex. The major determinants would include the demand, actual and potential, for the products of the sector, the related levels of output and the methods of production. Consequently, the first stage in any study of the employment impact of the completion of the internal market for a given sector is to examine the market for the sector's products and the resulting level of output. The undertaking of such sectoral studies is a matter for individual Ministers and their Department as part of their responsibility for sectoral development policies.
In my replies to the Deputy of 27 October 1988, I gave examples of sectoral studies now under way in the Department of Industry and Commerce. As the results of these studies become available, my Department and FÁS will consider their implications for our training and other activities.
