Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Education Grant.

229.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork is not in receipt of a full European Social Fund grant in view of the fact that this person is living 16 miles from the college; if she will investigate the case in detail; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The scheme of allowances for persons attending training courses under my Department's middle level technician programme is governed by certain conditions. These conditions provide, inter alia, that the lower rate of grant applies in the case of every trainee whose home is within 15 miles of the college in which they are pursuing a training course and in the case of those who travel, or could reasonably be expected to travel, daily between their homes and the college.

The higher rate of grant may be paid only to those, not covered by the above conditions, who are obliged to stay overnight in a college town.

The authorities at the college in question are satisfied that the lower rate of grant is applicable in the case of the person referred to by the Deputy.
