Vol. 384 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

87.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has had a rate of unmarried mother's allowance reduced; and if this position will be rectified.

An overpayment arose in this case as it appeared that the person concerned and her child had spent periods abroad during which the allowance was not payable. However the circumstances which led to the overpayment are at present under further investigation by a local officer of the Department. As soon as this officer's report is received the matter will be reviewed.

88.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in payment of arrears of disability benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

Payment of disability benefit to the person concerned on her current claim was suspended pending medical examination, as she had been found capable of work by a medical referee in relation to her previous benefit claim. She did not attend for medical examination on the date arranged, and it later transpired that she had been hospitalised at the time.

Payment of benefit has since been authorised, but could not immediately issue as details of the amounts paid by way of supplementary welfare allowance, and adult and child dependants' allowance paid on her husband's unemployment benefit claim, had to be established. A cheque for all arrears due, less amounts paid on account, will shortly issue to her.
