Vol. 384 No. 4

Written Answers. - De-control of Liquid Milk Prices.

58.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his views on the possible de-control of liquid milk prices; the possible consequences for producers in terms of price; the possible consequences for consumers, with particular reference to costs and delivery in the event of de-control, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Milk is the only food product which is still subject to retail price control. In the context of its decision to set up a national milk agency the Government decided that de-control of the retail price of milk should take place following consultation with the industry. These consultations have already commenced and will be completed as soon as possible.

I am satisfied that de-control will not lead to any unjustified rise in consumer prices and that the new agency will ensure market stability. It will also ensure that suppliers engaged in all-the-year-round milk production are adequately protected. The new liquid milk arrangements should ensure a regular supply of milk at prices which will be satisfactory to both consumers and producers. I will, of course, continue to have the situation monitored to ensure that the arrangements operate as intended.
