Vol. 384 No. 4

Written Answers. - Beef Expansion/Heifer Beef Proposals.

62.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the nett benefit of the recently announced beef expansion/heifer beef proposals to (a) the economy (b) the producers and (c) the Goodman Group; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The initiative of a once-calved heifer scheme recently introduced by the Goodman Group in co-operation with Teagasc is a welcome addition to the attractive package of incentives already in place for the encouragement of beef production. This and other private schemes aimed at increasing cattle numbers have obvious potential benefits for producers, meat plants and the economy. It is, of course, much too early to indicate the nett benefits that will accrue from the initiative.
