Vol. 384 No. 5

Written Answers. - Delays in Court Transcripts.

70.

asked the Minister for Justice whether it is the case that problems are being caused for parties as a result of long delays in transcripts becoming available; and the proposals he has to improve the situation.

I understand that there may be significant delays in providing transcripts in some cases but that every effort is made to avoid hardship by giving priority to transcripts in cases of appeals by persons in custody. The delays arise mainly from the shortage of stenographers. The long term solution to the problem may be the use of computerised equipment and the feasibility of this is being examined at present.
