Vol. 384 No. 6

Written Answers. - Worker Participation on Boards of Companies.

18.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the reason this country opposed proposals from the European Council of Ministers which would have made it compulsory to allow worker participation on the boards of companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisfied that present arrangements for the participation of employees in the management of private sector companies are the most suitable for this country, given the industrial relations and economic climate which prevails here. Accordingly, we would not favour the imposition, by way of a Community directive, of mandatory forms of participation having general application.

However, as I mentioned in reply to Question No. 6 regarding the European Company Statute, we are engaged in consultations with various interests about the issue of worker participation among other things. Views expressed will be borne in mind in finalising our position on this issue.
