Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

72.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange a further medical examination to be carried out in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny who is an applicant for invalidity pension.

Invalidity pension is payable to insured persons who satisfy the contribution conditions and who are permanently incapable of work. Arrangements are being made to have the person concerned examined by a medical referee. His entitlement to invalidity pension will be reviewed in the light of the report of this examination.

73.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the percentage of those examined by the Department's medical referees who had disability benefit claims disallowed on medical grounds as a result, for each of the years from 1980 to 1987 and for the first six months of 1988.

The number of disability benefit claimants found to be capable of work following examination by the Department's statutorily appointed medical referees and thus no longer entitled to benefit from 1980 to 30 June 1988 are tabulated as follows;
