Vol. 384 No. 6

Written Answers. - Problem of Illiteracy.

121.

asked the Minister for Education the estimated number of illiterate people in the country at present; and the efforts being made to deal with this problem.

There are no official estimates of the level of illiteracy in Ireland. My Department will be endeavouring to ensure that those leaving the formal education system do not have literacy problems, and will support and encourage action by the various agencies concerned to the extent that resources will allow to help those with literacy difficulties.
