Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Assistant Teacher Appointments.

259.

asked the Minister for Education the procedure for the appointment of additional assistant teachers in national schools; and the stage at which it will be possible to allocate an eighth assistant teacher to the north Dublin national school project.

Additional teachers may be appointed in a national school where the number of pupils validly enrolled in the school on 30 September of the previous school year warrants the appointment, in accordance with the schedule of enrolments contained in Circular 23/88. However, the Rules for National Schools provide that these arrangements need not be strictly enforced where a school is newly recognised or newly organised.

I have, therefore, agreed to allow the appointment of an eighth assistant teacher to this school with effect from January 1989. The school authorities have advised accordingly.

The procedure governing the selection of teachers for appointment is laid down in the booklet Boards of Management of National Schools: Constitution of Boards and Rules of Procedure.
