Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - Non-Certificate School Leavers.

90.

asked the Minister for Education the proportion of those in each county in the appropriate age cohort who leave school without obtaining a certificate of some kind, for example intermediate certificate, group certificate or leaving certificate.

The information sought is not readily available in the form in which the Deputy requests it. Information on the school-leaving patterns of young people covered by the social guarantee is collected by FÁS and is reported by FÁS region and not by county. Young people covered by the social guarantee include those who leave school with a group or intermediate certificate as well as those who leave without qualifications, that is, all early school leavers.

The relevant totals for the ten FÁS regions are as follows for the social guarantee year, July 1986 to June 1987:

Dublin North

2,166

Dublin South

615

Dublin West

1,564

1,351

North-West

Mid-West

949

South-West

2,091

South-East

1,748

Midlands

1,055
