Vol. 385 No. 1

Written Answers. - Curriculum and Examinations Board.

93.

asked the Minister for Education the reason she is not operating the Curriculum and Examinations Board in the form established by her predecessor.

This matter was discussed at some length in Dáil Éireann in November 1987. As I explained at the time, I decided that the interim Curriculum and Examinations Board should be reconstituted as the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment mainly because I did not see how the main function of the council — advising the Minister of all matters relating to the school curriculum — would be enhanced in any way by making them a statutory body. I also considered that the council would be better able to fulfil their central role if they were not encumbered with responsibility for organising the certificate examinations.
