Written Answers. - Air Corps Helicopters.

27.

asked the Minister for Defence the total number of helicopters currently in the possession of the Air Corps; the number currently in service; the average number in service over the past 12 months; if problems are being experienced in keeping helicopters in service due to a lack of trained technicians; if he will give the number of pilots currently trained for night flights of the Dauphin helicopters; the number of such helicopters available for night flights; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): The Air Corps has 15 helicopters, eight Alouette, two Gazelle and five Dauphin. All 15 are in service with seven operationally serviceable. Over the past 12 months the number operationally serviceable has averaged six. The servicing of the helicopters is carried out by Air Corps technicians, and by outside contract as may be necessary. Twelve pilots have night flight training on Dauphin helicopters. All five Dauphin helicopters are equipped for night flying, with three operationally serviceable as at 6 December 1988.
