Vol. 385 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - National Museum — National Gallery Appointments.

1.

asked the Taoiseach when it is proposed to fill both the posts of Director of the National Gallery and Director of the National Museum; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if a firm decision has been made by the Board of the National Gallery regarding the appointment of a director since 19 October 1988; if such a decision has been communicated to him; and if so, when he will be in a position to make an announcement on the appointment of a director.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.

The Board of Governors and Guardians of the National Gallery has appointed Mr. Raymond Keaveney, former Assistant Director in the Gallery to the post of Director.

Dr. Patrick Wallace has been appointed Director of the National Museum of Ireland.

Arising out of the Taoiseach's reply is he in a position to say if it is the intention to appoint an assistant director to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Mr. Raymond Keaveney, which is welcome? In view of the fact that there was a "Today Tonight" programme and an article in The Irish Times dealing with the serious condition regarding the roof of the gallery and the state of repair——

Deputy Enright is now injecting new matter.

Is the Taoiseach in a position to state when the new director will be able to supervise these very urgent works in view of the fact that many paintings were seriously damaged as documented on television and in newspapers?

Arrangements are being made to provide some assistance for the new director. A substantial sum of money has been provided for the necessary improvements in the gallery.

Is the Taoiseach in a position to say when those works will commence?

At the earliest possible moment.
