Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Repair Works.

256.

asked the Minister for Education the reason it is necessary for schools carrying out repair works to complete the work before 16 December 1988 in order to qualify for a departmental grant; whether it might be more sensible to have such work done during the holiday period in order that there would be no disruption to classes as in the case of a post-primary school (details supplied) in County Wexford; and if she will change this condition in order to introduce a more flexible arrangement.

My Department did not specify the date mentioned by the Deputy and in the case of Loreto Convent School, the school's architect reported that the windows were in a highly dangerous condition.

Consequently, to avoid injury to pupils and teachers, my Department advised the school authorities to have the work done as a matter of extreme urgency.
