Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - Promotion of Sport for the Handicapped.

269.

asked the Minister for Education, in light of the performance of the Irish team at the Special Olympics this year, whether a special allocation will be given to help promote sport for the handicapped in all regions of the country.

I assume that the Deputy refers to the Paralympic Games which were held in Seoul, South Korea in October.

My Department provided a grant of £60,000 to the Irish Paralympic Council towards the cost of sending a team of athletes to participate in the games.

In addition my Department provides an annual grant to the Irish Wheelchair Association towards the cost of coaching, equipment, special project and administration, including the employment of an administrator. In 1988 this grant was £33,000 (£15,000 in respect of the administrator and £18,000 under the other headings).
