Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - Vocational School Scholarship Scheme.

271.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that a person (details supplied) in County Sligo who is a student in the Regional Technical College, Galway, is unable to obtain a scholarship because she had previously done a third level course in education in University College, Galway, leading to a degree; that in present circumstances it is virtually impossible for such a person to get a job teaching for which she is qualified; that the National Diploma in Business Studies should help this arts graduate to find suitable industrial employment, as certified by the head of school of humanities in the college; and if she will consider, in the circumstances, removing the anomaly that exists in the eligibility section of conditions of award in the scholarship scheme for 1988.

Under the terms of the vocational education committee scholarships scheme a degree-holder is not eligible for the award of a scholarship in respect of attendance at a further undergraduate course.

The terms of the scholarships scheme must be applied equally to all candidates and it would not be open to me to make an exception in this case.
