Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - Police Presence in UDR Operations.

59.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has satisfied himself regarding the level of accompaniment of the UDR by the RUC.

The Government attach great importance to the commitment contained in paragraph 8 (a) of the Hillsborough Communique that save in the most exceptional circumstances, there is a police presence in all operations by the armed forces, including the UDR, which involve direct contact with the community. The Government are not satisfied with the rate of progress towards the full implementation of this policy and, through the framework of the Anglo Irish Conference, are continuing to press for a significant acceleration in this regard.
