Vol. 385 No. 8

Written Answers - Blood Transfusion Service.

60.

asked the Minister for Health if the Blood Transfusion Service Board imports plasma and blood products from the United States and Third World countries; and if he will make a statement on whether any change has taken place in the importation of such products since the outbreak of the AIDS virus in this country.

While the Blood Transfusion Service Board has always collected its blood and plasma supplies from donors in this country, it did import some blood derivatives from the United States of America and Europe. However, due to the emergence of the AIDS virus the board stopped purchasing these derivatives abroad.

All of the Blood Transfusion Service Board's products are therefore now derived from blood and plasma collected in this country.
