Vol. 386 No. 2

Written Answers. - German Classes.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the discontinuation of German classes in Maynooth post-primary school, County Kildare, unless such classes are paid for by the parents of the children; if her attention has further been drawn to the impossibility of providing such classes under the current teacher allocation to Kildare Vocational Education Committee from which the Maynooth school derives its allocation; if she will review the situation with a view to devise some means whereby the classes could be allowed to continue; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The allocations of teaching staff in the second level VEC sector are made by my Department on a committeewide basis and not in respect of individual schools. The initial allocation of teaching staff in respect of the current school session (1988-89) was issued by my Department to the County Kildare VEC on 14 July 1988. Since that date following consideration of a number of appeals, the committee's teacher allocation has been increased by 8.8 wholetime teacher equivalents. The deployment of its teaching resources and the organisation of its educational programme are matters to be determined by the committee itself within the parameters of the authorised allocation.
