Vol. 386 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Kildare Road Works.

82.

asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding the availability of funds from his Department to Kildare County Council for the carrying out of road/bridge replacement/realignments at the Railway Bridge, Sallins, County Kildare; if the work will proceed in the current year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

83.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Kildare County Council have from their own resources raised their proportion of the cost of road and bridge realignments at Bond Bridge, Maynooth, County Kildare; that the local authority are awaiting an allocation from his Department in respect of the balance; if he will respond favourably to such a request at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am taking Questions Nos. 82 and 83 together.

Bond Bridge and Sallins Railway Bridge are located on regional roads. Primary responsibility for improvement works on such roads, including the timing and execution of the works, rests with the local authority. The authority have applied for special road grant assistance for road realignment bridge improvements at both of these locations. The question of special road grant funding to meet an appropriate share of costs arising on the proposed schemes in 1989 will be decided in the context of this year's road grant allocations, which will be finalised within the next few weeks.
