Vol. 386 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fishing Vessels' Tonnages.

23.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the anomaly which exists whereby identical fishing vessels can be registered at different tonnage levels in different EC countries because of different measurement methods; and if he will change Irish procedures in this regard to ensure that our fleet owners will not be at any disadvantage vis-á-vis competitors in other countries.

It has been suggested to my Department that there are some anomalies as between the systems employed to register the tonnage of fishing vessels in different countries. This matter is being examined and the Deputy can be assured that every effort will be made in the procedures we will follow to ensure that our fleet owners will not be put at any disadvantage.
