Vol. 387 No. 1

Written Answers. - Emigration.

32.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons who emigrated in the years ending mid-April in (a) 1984 (b) 1985 (c) 1986 (d) 1987 and (e) 1988.

In order to determine the actual numbers of inward and outward migrants in any period it would be necessary to have comprehensive documentary or other administrative procedures relating to the movement of persons into and out of the State. As such procedures are not in force the only reliable estimates of migration flows are those for net migration (i.e. the difference between the inward and outward flows) between successive censuses of population.

Annual population estimates (which are subject to revision when the results of the next census become available) are made in respect of mid-April of each year from which estimates of net migration can be derived for the twelve months to mid-April. The estimates of net migration for the five most recent 12 month periods are as follows:

Year to mid-April

Estimated Net Outward Migration

1984

9,000

1985

20,000

1986

28,000

1987

27,000

1988

32,000
