Vol. 387 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tralee, Kerry, Drainage Works.

96.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department has investigated the reason Tralee Urban District Council, County Kerry is carrying out major drainage works in the town; and whether blame for deficiencies in the existing culvert can be attributed to the design of the 1975 scheme.

The Denny Street culvert was constructed in 1975 on the basis of advice and information available at that time to the local authorities. Following the severe flooding that occurred in 1986, Tralee Urban District commissioned a report on all the sources of flooding in the town. Arising out of this report, the urban council submitted urgent proposals to my Department for modifications to part of the culvert at the junction of Ashe Street and the Mall. Approval issued to the carrying out of these works as part of the Mounthawk/Balloonagh Drainage Scheme which is currently under construction.

In October 1988, approval issued to preliminary proposals for major flood relief works and it is now a matter for the Council to advance the planning of these works.
