asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a licence has issued to locate a fish cage just off shore at Roundstone Beach, County Galway; and whether he approves of this, in view of his stated intention to provide £0.5 million for a special programme of environmental improvement works by local authorities at some of our large beaches.

I have no function in relation to the issue of licences of this kind which is a matter for the Minister for the Marine under the Fisheries Act, 1980. The Act sets out the procedure for the designation of an area for aquaculture and for the subsequent licensing of activities in the designated area. There is provision for the consideration of objections before decisions are made on licence applications.
