Vol. 387 No. 3

Written Answers. - Nuclear Energy Board.

27.

asked the Minister for Energy the changes he favours in the role and functions of the Nuclear Energy Board; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The 1971 Act which set up the Nuclear Energy Board was essentially a charter for the supervision and regulation of a nuclear power programme in this country. The new Bill, which I will be circulating shortly, reflects more accurately the activities of the Nuclear Energy Board today in relation to protecting the public from the dangers of ionising radiation and puts in place an appropriate framework for dealing with radiological emergencies. The Bill, therefore, updates the Statute Book and provides a more relevant and comprehensive charter for the new body to be known as the National Radiological Protection Institute.
