Dáil Éireann debate -
Thursday, 16 Feb 1989

Vol. 387 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Contingent in Namibia.

38.

asked the Minister for Justice, in addition to the legislation which has recently been published, the steps he proposes to take to ensure that an adequate force of gardaí will be made available in assisting the peace process in Namibia; the plans he has to ensure that this force is adequately prepared in every aspect to operate in this new, political and cultural environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in the course of yesterday's Dáil debate on the Garda Síochána Bill, 1989, selection of members of the Garda Síochána for service with the United Nations Transition Assistance Group in Namibia is at an advanced stage and no difficulty is envisaged in meeting the UN request for a 35-member contingent. The Garda contingent will be fully prepared and briefed on all matters relevant to service in Namibia before taking up duty there.
