Vol. 387 No. 3

Written Answers. - Attendance at Special School.

65.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 22; the reason the person concerned has not been placed in a special school suitable to his needs for more than two years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The enrolment of any child in school is a matter, in the first instance, for the parents and the relevant school authorities. There is documentary evidence that this boy has learning disabilities which necessitate special schooling at present. Arrangments were made, with the agreement of the parents, for the body's enrolment in a school, which would meet his special needs. It was thought that such an enrolment had been effected on 7 November 1988. However, it is now understood that the boy was withdrawn from the school, without notice, after two weeks.

The Deputy is advised that the best educational interest of the boy would be served by his return to the school in question. In this connection the parents cannot be compelled to send the boy back to school because the school attendance Act does not apply to pupils with disabilities.
