Vol. 387 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prison Deaths.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to act on the riders made by juries at a number of recent inquests into prison deaths, especially in relation to improved methods of communication for prisoners in cells; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Recommendations made by inquest juries in cases of prison deaths are fully considered by my Department with a view to implementation if deemed to be feasible and desirable.

Regarding the recommendation, which was made in one instance, that improved methods of communication should be provided to enable offenders in cells to attract attention more easily, work was already planned and is now in progress at Mountjoy Prison on the provision of a new cell-call system.
