Vol. 387 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prison Accommodation.

41.

asked the Minister for Justice whether existing prison accommodation is adequate; whether there are warrants unexecuted on account of inadequacies of prison accommodation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Continuing progress is being made on a programme to improve the quality of existing prison accommodation and to provide additional accommodation. In this connection, arrangements are being made to accommodate, in the near future, 120 offenders in the new place of detention at Wheatfield and a further 50 offenders at extra accommodation recently completed at Fort Mitchel. There is no practice of leaving warrants unexecuted on account of inadequacy of prison accommodation.
