Vol. 387 No. 5

Written Answers. - Terrorist Violence Combatting.

44.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has considered the establishment of a comprehensive confidential telephone service, especially in Border areas, coupled with a media appeal for information on those responsible for terrorist violence in Northern Ireland and in the Republic; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the facilities which exist at present are, in general, adequate to enable the public to contact the gardaí on a basis of total confidentiality in connection with any information they may have concerning crime. Such information can be conveyed by telephone, in writing or by personal call either to an individual member of the Garda Síochána or to any Garda station.

When, on the occasion of any particular serious crime, there is seen to be a need for it, specific telephone lines for the receipt of confidential telephone calls are set up and the relevant telephone numbers are widely advertised.
