Vol. 387 No. 8

Written Answers. - School for Mentally Handicapped.

63.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the dreadful condition of St. Joseph's special school, Snipe Avenue, Newcastle, Galway; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that St. Joseph's is the only moderately mentally handicapped school in County Galway catering for 93 pupils; if she will give a timetable for the construction of the proposed replacement school; the present stage the process is at; and when building will commence.

Following a meeting in December last with representatives of the school, I have asked my Department's inspectorate to review and report on the likely enrolment trends in the area of special education in County Galway. The Department have also received an application for the provision of special education facilities for this population in the East Galway area and concern has also been expressed by people in the Gaeltacht areas at having only centralised facilities. When my inspectorate's report on these matters has been received, I shall have its terms considered as quickly as possible.
