Vol. 387 No. 9

Written Answers. - Oldcastle (Meath) Water Supply.

72.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the problems with the water supply in Oldcastle, County Meath, in regard to water quality; the proposal to remedy this situation in stage 2 of the Kells/Oldcastle regional water scheme; when he received the proposal from Meath County Council to implement stage 2 of the Kells/Oldcastle water scheme; and when it will receive sanction.

I am aware of the existing water supply situation in the Kells/Oldcastle area. The source for this supply is susceptible to pollution from agricultural activities.

Revised contract documents for stage 2 of the Kells/Oldcastle water supply scheme were submitted to my Department in December 1985. The scheme is designed to replace the source of supply to Oldcastle by connecting to the stage 1 scheme supply at Skerry Cross. This is supplied from a more reliable source. In the light of existing commitments in the sanitary services programme and the level of available finance, it is not possible to indicate at this time when the council may be allowed to go to tender.
