Vol. 387 No. 10

Written Answers. - Special Waste Plans.

134.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authorities which have produced special waste plans for the disposal of dangerous and toxic waste under the European Communities (Toxic and Dangerous) Waste Regulations, 1982; if he will publish the said plans; and the steps he intends taking in respect of the local authorities which have not to date produced such plans in accordance with the aforesaid regulations.

A total of six local authorities have formally adopted special waste plans. The remaining authorities have either prepared draft plans which are currently the subject of correspondence between my Department and the local authorities involved or are in the process of preparing plans for submission to the Department.

I have written personally to the local authorities and my Department is in regular contact with them about the necessity to finalise these plans.

A local authority is obliged to give public notice of the making of a special waste plan and must keep a copy for inspection.
