Vol. 387 No. 10

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

161.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork was denied a leaving certificate on the grounds that she brought notes into an examination and was not accused of this breach of regualtions at the time, nor was the principal of her school where the examination was being held told of this alleged breach of regulations; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the first intimation either the school principal or the student had of this alleged breach of regulations was a letter from her Department almost six weeks after the examination; that serious damage has been done to this student's character and that, as she has not obtained a leaving certificate, her chances of obtaining employment are diminished; and if he will take action to rectify this matter.

My Department are satisfied that the candidate in question breached the regulations governing the conduct of candidates at the certificate examinations. The breach came to light some weeks after the examinations when this candidate's scripts were being marked, and the school authorities were notified on 26 July.

At the time I and my Department officials had discussions with the interested parties regarding this matter. Because of the serious nature of the breach I do not propose to alter the decision taken in this case.
