Vol. 387 No. 10

Written Answers. - Multiple Stores.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he intends to review the market share position of multiple stores in the country; whether he will allow unlimited growth; whether he will set a limit at present levels; if he will set a lower market share 1 per cent limit than is held by some multiples at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no immediate intention of reviewing the market share position of multiple stores in the country.

The Fair Trade Commission will be reviewing the operation of the Restrictive Practices (Groceries) Order, 1987, later on in the year and market share will be one of the matters considered as part of this review.

Every merger or take-over in the grocery trade which requires my approval is carefully examined having regard to the criteria set out in the Schedule to the Mergers, Take-overs and Monopolies (Control) Act, 1978 (as amended). I am satisfied that the powers vested in me by the above legislation are sufficient and I have no plans at present to take on additional powers.
