Vol. 387 No. 10

Written Answers. - Radio Broadcasting Services.

42.

asked the Minister for Communications whether frequencies are available for him to permit radio broadcasting over groups of counties which will allow the possibility of regional special interest stations.

It is a matter for the Independent Radio and Television Commission to determine the configuration of radio broadcasting services best suited to the country's needs. I will examine any proposals from the Commission as to their technical feasibility on a regional basis, if the Commission has a requirement of that nature.

43.

asked the Minister for Communications whether he has had any discussions in relation to the proposed charge by RTE for use of the radio transmission network by other broadcasters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

44.

asked the Minister for Communications if he has any role to play in resolving difficulties which have arisen between RTE and Century Communications, the licensee for the new national radio station, regarding the price to be charged by RTE for use of their distribution network; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 43 and 44 together.

As provided for in section 16 of the Radio and Television Act, 1988 I have had discussions with RTE and with the IRTC regarding the charges proposed for use of the radio transmission network and I am considering the situation as a matter of urgency.
