Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - Science Teachers Retraining.

134.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the shortage of teachers in certain areas of science, she will consider the retraining of teachers in other areas of science who are unemployed; and if unemployed teachers will be given the opportunity of correcting examination papers.

I do not accept that there is a shortage of qualified teachers in the sciences. Most regular in-service courses run by my Department at national and regional centres are open to all science teachers whether they are practising teachers or unemployed teachers. Unemployed teachers are free to apply for correcting examination scripts but preference is given to teachers with ongoing classroom experience.
