Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Mayo Employment Exchange Statistics.

65.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, in relation to County Mayo he will indicate (i) the number signing on at each employment exchange at (a) the end of January 1987 (b) the end of December 1987 (c) the end of January 1988 and (d) the end of December 1988 (ii) the numbers in such exchanges interviewed under Jobsearch programmes and the numbers placed as a result of such interviews (iii) the numbers who signed off in the periods referred to; and whether such signing off was a result of emigration or Jobsearch schemes and (iv) if he has satisfied himself with the level of employment in County Mayo; and the proposals he has to rectify this position.

The information sought at (i) and (ii) of the question is not readily available on a county basis. The tables below, which are based on figures from my Department's Office located in County Mayo, set out: (i) the numbers signing on at these offices at (a) end of January 1987 (b) end of December 1987 (c) end of January 1988 and (d) end of December 1988. (ii) the numbers referred by these offices to FÁS for interview under the Jobsearch Programme, and (iii) the numbers placed under the programme.

Responsibility for data relating to the outflows from the live register rests with the Central Statistics Office and not with my Department. Information is not available on the various reasons why people sign off. It may be of interest, however, to the Deputy that in the period in question some 700 in these employment exchange areas signed off in the context of the Jobsearch Programme. In addition, those placed on FÁS schemes and courses under the programme, other than Jobsearch course, would not be eligible to sign the live register for the duration of the scheme or course in question.

The last part of the question does not relate to my Department's responsibilities.
