Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - Milk Meters.

84.

andMr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the steps, if any, which are being taken to ensure the accuracy of milk meters attached to bulk milk tankers used by the various dairy co-operatives in the collection of milk from the farming community.

Weights and Measures legislation requires that milk meters intended for use in trade must obtain prior pattern approval. This entails examination and testing in accordance with internationally accepted procedures to ensure that designs of measuring instruments do not facilitate fraud. Meters of the approved designs are then submitted to the local weights and measures inspector for verification. All meters are subject to annual inspection by the weights and measures inspectorate.

85.

andMr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of inspections carried out on milk meters attached to bulk milk tankers to ensure their accuracy; and the number of faulty milk meters detected for each of the years 1983 to 1988 inclusive.

It is not possible to provide this detailed information in the time requested. Immediately, it becomes available I will communicate with the Deputies.
