Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - Income Tax.

150.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason his Department are imposing income tax on a person (details supplied) in Dublin 17 at the rate of £10.60 per month as and from 5 April 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that a certificate of tax free allowances was issued to the taxpayer on 8 March 1989. His allowances were restricted to take account of his social welfare old age contributory pension, which is paid gross, leaving a net tax free allowance of £536 available to him for use in connection with his retirement pension. He is liable to tax at the standard rate on the excess of his retirement pension over his net tax-free allowance. On the basis of the information available to the inspector, it is estimated that the tax deduction from the pension in question will be £4.24 monthly.
