Written Answers. - Defence Forces Resignations.

asked the Minister for Defence the total number of personnel who have resigned from the Defence Forces in the three months ending 31 March 1989, giving rank and skills; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): In the first three months of 1989, a total of 12 officers retired voluntarily from the Permanent Defence Force. This figure includes four Commandants, seven Captains and one Lieutenant.

In the same period 229 other ranks personnel were discharged. This figure is comprised of three Sergeant-Majors, one Battalion-Quartermaster-Sergeant, four Company-Sergeants, five CompanyQuartermaster-Sergeants, 21 Sergeants, 37 Corporals, 157 Privates, and one Cadet.

The duties on which these personnel were employed include the following: armourer, butcher, carpenter, clerk, cook, driver, fitter, instrumentalist, printer, welder, surveyor, electrical artificer, mechanic, radar/radio mechanic and telegraphist.

The corresponding figures for the first three months of 1988 were 12 officers and 241 other ranks.
